Herbal Sedatives for Insomnia or Agitation

Sedatives are plants with relaxing properties that are often used for insomnia or deeper agitation. There is a lot of overlap between sedatives and herbs for anxiety. Various mild herbal sedative plants are found in assorted commercial herbal sleep blends and teas. Most will help us feel mellower or a bit more like sleeping, but they will not affect our ability to drive or operate machinery. The mild sedatives, in normal amounts, are usually safe for children, healthy adults, and the elderly, unless of course one is allergic to the specific herb or there is a listed contraindication. The stronger herbs may have contraindications or might affect one’s ability to drive or operate machinery, so employ caution and common sense when trying those. Many moderate or stronger sedatives will not be appropriate for children. Mild herbal sedatives include Ashwagandha, Balm (also called lemon balm, taken hot), Chamomile, Lavender, Linden Flower, Longan Fruit, Oat Straw, Red Clover, Peach Leaf, Vanilla, and Wood Betony (taken hot). Moderate and strong herbal sedatives include California Poppy, Cannabis, Catnip, Hops, Kava-kava, Passion Flower, Scute, Skullcap, Valerian, and Vervain.
